The SERVice PROfessional's Tools of the Trade

4/5/2024 (Permalink)

tools A dry sponge, moisture meter and infrared camera are common tools of the trade when working fire and water jobs.

As experts in the field, we understand the importance of using high-quality equipment to ensure efficient and effective restoration work.

One of the key tools of the trade when assessing water damage is a moisture meter. A moisture meter is a device that is used to help accurately measure the percentage of water, wetness or dryness, within a given material. Moisture meters can be invasive or non-invasive, meaning they do not have to penetrate the material. At SERVPRO of Jonesboro we use moisture meters with separate thermo hygrometers, meaning that while the moisture meter checks for wetness/dryness, the thermos hygrometer checks the temperature and relative humidity.

Another essential tool is an infrared camera. Infrared cameras are non-contact devices that detect thermal energy and then convert it into an electrical signal, which is then processed to produce an image. Infrared technology uses temperature to determine moisture, cooler temps indicate the material is wet while higher temps are dry. The term FLIR (which stands for “Forward Looking Infrared”) refers to the technology used to create an infrared image of a scene without having to “scan” the scene with a moving sensor, which is what was previously required. A moisture meter is always used to confirm the findings made with an FLIR camera.

A dry sponge is used to test for soot particles after fire damage and are ideal for cleaning surfaces where you can’t use water or solvents. By swiping the sponge across surfaces, we can see the accumulation of particles. A black or brown discoloration is indicative of fire-related particles and white or light gray is normal house dust. The uniqueness of the sponge is all in the cell structure, it is a vulcanized, non-toxic, natural latex rubber sponge. When the product was invented, it was called a chemical sponge, because, at the time, chemicals meant more cleaning power, but there are no actual chemicals within the sponge, and they are entirely safe for use on delicate surfaces.

These are just some of the tools we used every day at SERVPRO of Jonesboro. Investing in the right tools of the trade not only enhances the efficiency of our work but also showcases our expertise and commitment to restoring properties with care and precision.

SERVPRO Safety: Water and Mold Remediation; ladder usage, electrical encounters

1/8/2024 (Permalink)

Man leading class Steve Singleton, our construction manager, discussing different SERVPRO safety procedures.

Our SERVPRO mitigation and reconstruction teams held a safety meeting at the start of the year to go over remediation reminders and protocol to safely handle water and mold jobs as well as general safety of using ladders and electrical encounters.

If a water loss is considered to be category 3 by a crew leader- meaning the water is grossly contaminated, containing bacterium, viruses, toxigenic (poison) or other harmful agents that can cause adverse reactions, our team will always wear required PPE such as gloves, boots, coveralls (Tyvek), eye protection and masks. HEPA air filtration (air scrubbers) and HEPA vacuuming will be required, with the possibility of containment of the area.

HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate air [filter]" (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy) Filters meeting the HEPA standard must satisfy certain levels of efficiency.

If mold is present at a jobsite, containment and PPE will be required along with HEPA air filtration (negative air) and HEPA vacuuming with the possibility of using a HEPA air scrubber. SERVPRO crew leaders will take the lead in identifying the level of containment, getting approval, and implementing PPE and documentation.

Our construction manager, Steve Singleton, will be contacted for mold consultation. He has extensive knowledge in the industry due to his 12 IICRC certifications including: Master Water Restorer, Master Fire and Smoke Restorer, and Residential Mold Inspector. He also has 2 OSHA Health and Safety certifications and is a Licensed Asbestos Inspector.

There are 5 levels of mold contamination, depending on the square foot of infestation. At 10 square feet of affected area, it is recommended to call a removal company to handle the clean up SAFELY. We would never want you to put yourself in danger. It’s best to let a professional handle a situation such as this. You can trust SERVPRO of Jonesboro to follow all the required protocols necessary to handle any unsafe water losses and mold infestations.

If you experience an emergency water loss or suspect mold, call us today to set up an inspection.

AC Running More Frequently, Is It?

6/12/2023 (Permalink)

boy in a stripped shirt changing the thermostat Heavy usage on your AC unit can cause long term problems if the system is not checked regularly.

Have you had to run your AC more frequently to keep you and your family cool this summer? You are not alone! It’s common for this to occur as temperatures increase. This can cause several problems if your system must cool your home several degrees.

So, What’s The Problem?

As a result of over usage, your AC system essentially works extremely hard. The more your AC runs to keep your cozy home cool enough for you and your family, the more energy it utilizes. In turn, this leads to more wear and tear on your AC system.

The constant running of an AC reduces pressure in the evaporator until it freezes over. The freezing of the coil can cause liquid refrigerant to flood back into the systems compressor and damage it. This damage leads to water damage. If the water damage is left untreated, it will result in a mold infestation as well.

What can SERVPRO do about it?

SERVPRO has highly trained technicians that specialize in water damage, fire damage, mold remediation, storm damage, and commercial services. Our team has an extensive fleet of vehicles specifically equipped to tackle the job. Once the water is extracted, we dry your property quickly, and finish with professional-grade cleaning, sanitizing, and deodorizing products.

How Do I Prevent This?

Having a preventative maintenance plan in place can save you thousands of dollars. Check your system before the summer approaches as well as frequently throughout the summer. Your specialist can maintain the filters, inspect the line for leaks, and more. This allows you to catch any problems before more time passes allowing the issue to get worse.

Call SERVPRO at 870-934-0501 if you have water damage from your AC unit, as well as any other restoration needs you may have.

Winter Everywhere You Look

3/20/2023 (Permalink)

Graphic of a heated thermastate and a cold termastate side by side If you experience winter adversities, SERVPRO can come to the rescue, whether it's snowing or raining, we will be there for you 24/7.

Winter starts on Dec. 21, but it will look different according to where you are in the nation. In our area of Arkansas and other regions near us, we generally experience a mild winter with only slightly lower temperatures. Other regions splash into the season with heavy snow that lasts all season.

Wherever you are, winter comes with its own set of severe weather threats that could damage your home and send your family into the cold (or rain… fog…or well you see).

When you know everything that winter could bring, you can get your home ready and lower the risk of potential damages and keep your family safe all season.

Winter Around the Nation

Moderate, rainy, frigid, and snowy are adjectives that have all been used to describe this year’s winter season across the two halves of the nation.

The Midwest and some parts of the East Coast will see temperatures in extreme lows and snowstorms throughout the season. On the West Coast, things will be mild with some warmth and rain.

These predictions will be slightly different regionally, but we should prepare for the worst to lower the overall possibility of damages.

Winter Around Jonesboro

In Jonesboro, we enjoy a mild winter with lows that don’t often dip lower than the 30-degree range and a minimum amount of precipitation. This year is predicted to be colder than normal, with the coldest air blowing in towards the end of the season.

Snow and ice cannot be ruled out, along with a couple of freezes. Because our weather can be unpredictable, the more prepared we are, the safer we can keep our property and our families.

Get Prepared

To reduce the fear of weather-related damage, you should do a few things ahead of winter. The first would be to learn all the different kinds of storms that could affect our neighborhoods in Jonesboro.

Next, you should have at least two forms of devices that can receive weather alerts, including one that doesn’t require external power in case a storm kills the power.

Building or updating an emergency supply kit is another step you should take to prepare your home for the winter season. Keep your kit in a location near an interior room, and take a look at the contents regularly to keep it appropriate for each season. Pack one for the car to be prepared for unexpected situations.

Even if we don’t see very cold temperatures this winter, weatherproofing your windows and door frames can prevent damaging moisture and help with your electricity bill. Put a cover over any faucets outside before the cold does hit our area so your pipes don’t freeze.

Your roof takes care of your house year-round, so check it before winter sets in to repair anything necessary. Trim trees that are close to your home, and consider adding insulation to your attic to keep your house warmer and ensure your home can survive any storm.

Winter can be a season full of magic that feels like a fuzzy blanket and a cup of hot chocolate when you have protected your home. Put SERVPRO in your contact list and take advantage of our round-the-clock availability to get back to all things comfy fast after a disaster.

If you experience damage in a winter storm, call us. We have the experience and equipment to get your home back to normal.

Choose SERVPRO and Choose Your Neighbors

Three SERVPRO employees moving equipment from truck with one employee setting up equipment in the back Allow us to utilize our years of extensive experience and training to help you through your restoration needs.

There are a lot of reasons to choose SERVPRO as a partner for your restoration needs. When you choose to work with us, you are getting a company that carries detailed training, certifications, and experiences in restoring fire, storm, and water damage.

We also handle mold remediation if you discover spots in your home or business. We are certified to get things taken care of quickly before structural damage sets in. We can also take care of specialty cleanup needs such as removing graffiti or handling biohazard spills.

The best reason to choose SERVPRO? We are a locally owned and operated business and our staff is your neighbor.

Reasons Being Locally Owned Is a Difference-Maker:

When you need a restoration on your property, you want to partner with a company that is highly regarded and trustworthy that will care for your home as you would. But you need a company that is located somewhere nearby because timing is essential to recovery.

1. We Can Respond Fast

When a disaster damages your personal spaces and belongings, you want to get back to normal quickly. When restoration starts or runs slowly it can make things worse as further damages set in and everything gets more expensive to fix.

SERVPRO of Jonesboro can respond 247 to any disaster your home or business may face. We are located in your community, which means your wait time will be low and work can begin right away.

2. We’re Prepared for Local Weather Conditions

When severe weather starts moving into our area, our team is watching the news with you. We live in your neighborhoods, and we are preparing our own homes while we are also gathering resources to start recovery for the community the moment the storm moves on.

Because we are locally owned and operated, we know what to expect out of our weather in this part of Arkansas. We have cleaned up after tornadoes and heavy rains that left behind flooded roads.

We know our springs and summer can be very volatile, and that our milder winters can still mean deep freezes and frozen pipes. We have dealt with everything that has come our way, and have the experience to clean it all up.

3. We Know Jonesboro Front and Back

A single online search will return several restoration companies, but the majority of them likely operate from a central location that may be towns or states away from our area. When they come to our neighborhoods, they won’t have a clear picture of where to go or who can help.

Our staff has lived in Jonesboro for a long time, and we are familiar with how to get around. We know being known as the city of churches often means when someone gives directions it is going to include church names instead of street names. We love our suburban home and its many parks.

We also know city hall and the processes necessary to obtain needed permits in order to keep your project moving forward.

4. An Extra Benefit

Most of the time when our area faces a disaster it can be handled with our local crew, but working with SERVPRO gives you the extra benefit of being backed by a national brand.

When our community experiences a large-scale disaster, we can call neighboring SERVPRO locations and have extra assistance in town within a few hours. We have the experience and help to get our community back to normal fast.

When disaster strikes your home or your business, we’re the team you can trust—located right here, close to home. Get in touch today to get started!

Why SERVPRO Should Be Your Restoration Pro

1/30/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO team unloading truck with equipment to handle a job. SERVPRO team handling a job on site.

Here at SERVPRO, we are locally owned and operated, which means like so many of you, we understand how much of a struggle each day of running a business can be. With everything you have on your mind on a normal day, a disaster is the last thing you want to have to consider.

The good news is that while you cannot prevent or oftentimes even predict a natural disaster, you can prepare for one. And because disasters don’t just strike at the office, this means being prepared at work and at home.

In order to get yourself prepared for disasters, you should start with an emergency plan. The American Red Cross is an awesome resource for general disaster-related knowledge. They have compiled data from events that happen across the nation you can use to prepare yourself.

For local information on the kinds of events we most commonly see here in Arkansas, keep our state emergency management page bookmarked. You can also use our county’s webpage before, during, and after an event for up-to-date information.

No matter where a disaster may strike, the sooner you are able to respond to the damages, the better your results will be. Fast response means extensive damage can be limited. That is why you should keep SERVPRO’s number in your back pocket at all times.

Why Choose SERVPRO?

We are ready for any situation. At some point, just about every town will suffer damages that require restoration, but no two scenarios will be alike.

Flooding is a great example of a disaster that is often widespread but never results in the same kind of damage. Every year, 14 million homes are at risk for flooding, but each home that takes on the water will require a completely unique approach to repair the damages. We have extensive training for every possible situation and can create an individualized plan that will be right for each property.

We are ready 247. When it comes to damages caused by any kind of disaster, response time will always be the most important piece of recovery. Acting fast means more of your home and property can be saved, and it means you are back to normal faster.

If your home takes on floodwaters, damages to furniture, fabric, and painted items will start immediately. Water that is allowed to sit for any amount of time will result in mold and mildew growth that can affect the structure of your home. That is why we are always ready to respond when you call, 247, 365 days a year.

Our services give you more. We don’t simply clean up the immediate damage caused by a disaster—we take on the entire project and see things through to completion.

That can mean helping you pack up your home, working with your insurance agent, and even tarping your roof if it needs it. We are ready to assist you with anything you need in order to make your recovery process as smooth and pain-free as possible.

Regardless of the kind of disaster you experience, SERVPRO of Jonesboro has you covered. We have years of training, experience, and expertise at our disposal, and our experts use industry-leading equipment that will leave your home back to preloss condition faster than you could have imagined.

When you suffer damage to your home or business, it’s important that you know who to call! Contact us today to get restoration started faster.

Commercial Building Damage

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

Any damage that can affect a residential property can also affect your commercial building. Below are the types of damage that can affect your business.

Types of Damage:

Water: This damage can be caused by a flood, burst of pipes, rain, or a number of other things. In any case, this can then result in contaminated water affecting surfaces and furniture. This type of damage can cause mold growth and items to be eroded. Electricity and water damage are volatile when combined.

Storm: Damage caused by strong winds, hail, and heavy rain which can remove roof tiles, break windows, and more. Storm damages can be very devastating and can cause your business to be put on hold.

Mold: Mold spreads quickly around properties as air-borne spores, and remediation is very important to prevent it from getting out of hand. This is highly unhygienic as well as being unappealing to look at. Even that small leak under your office’s bathroom sink can eventually cause mold growth.

Mold grows in any moist environment.

Fire: This type of damage can come from a gas stove, faulty outlet, lightning strikes, or a cigarette that isn’t properly put out. This can then cause severe destruction to your property which requires cleaning and restoration services.

If you have any questions or are in need of services please don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Jonesboro at (870) 934-0501.

Why We Focus on Restoration Instead of Replacement

4/30/2021 (Permalink)

If you have damage done to your home, it is a difficult thing to process and recover from. Dealing with the emotional impact of the actual emergency in addition to the recovery process can be a long uphill battle. The quicker you can get back into your home, the sooner you can begin to transition back to your typical daily routine.

Though it can always be difficult to begin the recovery process, working with a good restoration company like SERVPRO can make a tremendous difference. We focus on restoring your home and belongings, instead of simply recommending replacement. We opt for this method to save you time and money, it also allows us to get you back into your home more quickly.

How Restoration Can Lead to Saving Time and Money

We can help you save money on your insurance. Thankfully, homeowner’s insurance will often cover major losses from emergencies or disasters, but an expensive claim can raise your premium as well. By restoring what we can, instead of fully liquidating your home and belongings, we can keep the claim costs low, saving you money over time.

We can protect your sentimental items. When you must quickly leave the home in the event of an emergency, there are likely many precious, irreplaceable items that are left behind. With our restoration equipment, we can restore many of these items to look exactly as they did before the damage. We have restored photographs, art, heirlooms, and many other irreplaceable items over the years.

We make sure your home feels like home again. Going home after a disaster is quite an emotional experience, but by restoring your items when possible, we can ensure it truly feels like home when you walk in the door. From furniture to cosmetic touches, we can handle all the elements of restoration that make a difference in the way your home feels.

If you have damages and are feeling overwhelmed, we are here to help. You can call us as soon as you need to begin the restoration process. Contact us today at SERVPRO of Jonesboro at (870) 934-0501!

Mold Testing

3/26/2019 (Permalink)

In some cases, our mold jobs need to be referred to an industrial hygienist. If you were like me then you're asking "what exactly is that and what do they do?"

According to www.aiha.org ,  "Industrial Hygiene is a science and art devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, prevention, and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and well being, or significant discomfort among workers or among citizens of the community."

They describe Industrial hygienists as "scientists and engineers committed to protecting the health and safety of people in the workplace and the community."

SERVPRO of Jonesboro does not do inspections but we can give you a quote on the visible substance you can SEE.

The steps listed below illustrate our process for a “typical” mold remediation infestation:

  1. Emergency Contact - 870-934-0501
  2. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
  3. Mold Containment
  4. Air Filtration
  5. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
  6. Cleaning Contents and Belongings
  7. Restoration

Mold Control

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

You Can Control Mold

Inside your home you can control mold growth by:

  • Controlling humidity levels;
  • Promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes;
  • Thoroughly cleaning and drying after flooding;
  • Ventilating shower, laundry, and cooking areas.

If mold is growing in your home, you need to clean up the mold and fix the moisture problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water.

Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present. You do not need to know the type of mold growing in your home, and CDC does not recommend or perform routine sampling for molds. No matter what type of mold is present, you should remove it. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, either because of the amount or type of mold, you can not rely on sampling and culturing to know your health risk. Also, good sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable quantity of mold have not been set. The best practice is to remove the mold and work to prevent future growth.

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. Mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products will produce dangerous, toxic fumes.
  • Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.
  • Wear non-porous gloves and protective eye wear.
  • If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. Although focused on schools and commercial buildings, this document also applies to other building types.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.

Arkansas Levee in Danger of Failing, Jackson County Official Warns

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

Levee is eroding in Jackson County, Arkansas

Some people living near the White River in northeast Arkansas have been warned to leave their homes because flooding is eroding a levee on the river, an official says.

Jackson County Judge Jeff Phillips declared an emergency Tuesday night and announced a voluntary evacuation.

As a precaution, the American Red Cross opened a shelter in Newport, Arkansas, about 82 miles northeast of Little Rock. A breach could send floodwaters into parts of surrounding Jackson County and neighboring Woodruff County.

The White River at Newport reached major flood stage Thursday morning. As of 7 a.m. local time, it was at 30.01 feet, according to the National Weather Service. The river is expected to start falling on Friday, though the flood warning continues until Feb. 20. Early forecasts say more precipitation is likely early next week.

Heavy rain fell across much of the state earlier this week. Some parts of northeast Arkansas saw up to half a foot of rain.

“The levee is holding right now, but I just don’t know if it will hold,” Judge Phillips told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. "On the err of caution, I want people to be aware this levee could fail, and when it does, it's going to be a lot of water."

The newspaper said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inspectors were planning to survey the levee on Thursday.

Phillips told KAIT-TV he first learned of the levee erosion a week ago. He said more than $100,000 had been spent earlier on repairs to the levee.

“I personally think it just didn’t have enough time for the grass to grow and for it to settle before we got this kind of rainfall, so I think if we would’ve had a little more time, then I think it would do better than it’s doing right now,” he said.

A report by the Corps of Engineers warned in May 2017 the levee was deteriorating and more than 400 structures could be in danger if the levee failed.

"Any of the risks ... could possibly lead to a sudden breach of the levee, resulting in significant property damages and potentially the loss of life. The leveed area consists primary of farmland with some homes. Most of the homes are on the outer edge of the leveed area and the residents will have a short exit route out of the leveed area," the report said.

Betty Faust is one of about 30 homeowners who could be affected by the levee failing. On Wednesday she was packing her belongings.

"I didn't know there was anything going wrong. Last night the mayor called [and] told us about it," Faust told KARK-TV. "Right now we're just trying to get our personal stuff."

Robert Gilliaum told KAIT he has never seen water levels this high in the decades he has lived in the area.

“If this thing washes out, I have eight hours from the time it washes out until it gets here, so the folks south of me need to be prepared to move real quick like,” Gilliaum said.

Disaster Cleanup

Water Damage

Water damage, such as from a flood or in the aftermath of a fire, is not just unsightly and unsanitary – it can also be dangerous. From wallboards to rugs, items that are not thoroughly dried can sprout mold and mildew.

Your first task in addressing water damage is to remove any water that remains. That means pumping out standing water and drying out waterlogged surfaces.

  • Pump out flooded basements gradually (about one-third of the water per day) to avoid structural damage. If the water is pumped out completely in a short period of time, pressure from water-saturated soil on the outside could cause basement walls to collapse.
  • Bring all soft items (such as sofas, clothing, bedding, and throw rugs) outside if possible – sunlight and wind will help them dry faster.
  • Throw out items that have absorbed water and cannot be cleaned or disinfected. This includes mattresses, carpeting, cosmetics, stuffed animals and baby toys.
  • Remove all drywall and insulation that has been in contact with flood waters.
  • Consider removing vinyl floor coverings and tile to allow the substructures beneath or behind them to dry.
  • Keep the windows open and run fans – or keep them shut and run dehumidifiers – to pull moisture out of wood floors and subfloors, beams, doors, etc.

Be patient. Depending on the level of water damage incurred, it can take weeks or months for your home’s structural elements to be thoroughly dried. Only then should you replace drywall, carpets and other floor coverings.
